How long do negative credit items stay on my credit report?

They could remain on your files for up to 10 years, and oftentimes for about 7 years. However, sometimes negative items may only remain on your files for few years.

What are my legal rights when disputing credit report errors?

One thing you should know is that a creditor is expected by law to respond to your request in 30 days. However, it does not mean they have to give you a decision about error removal or fee reimbursement as a result of an error within that time. They have up to 90 days to resolve the issue or tell you why the item is correct.
